Displaying images via named ranges & indirect function causes filesize to increase

    Hello,

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I started with a file with 250 rows, each with a "link to" image in one cell. File size was around 500kb.

I then used named ranges and the indirect function to display the image only if certain conditions were met (similar to Cullen8's suggestion here). Each time I did this, the file size jumped by 1mb!

At this rate my finished file will be 250mb! Any idea what could be causing this?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi there,

At first glance, it seems as if each image you access is somehow being stored in your workbook.

Can you post a sample of your workbook (or even your code) here so we can get a better idea of what might be happening?

    Regards,

    Greg M

    excel-test.xlsx

Thanks for the interest in helping!

I have removed all but the first line, and embedded the pictures so you'll be able to see them.

I wondered if that was happening but thought it odd that the file grew by 1mb when the images are nearer 100kb each?

Re: Displaying images via named ranges & indirect function causes filesize to increase

    Hi again,

I don't know enough about the details of manipulating images to be able to speak definitively on this, but it seems (to me anyway!) that Excel is somehow managing to retain a sort of copy of the image previously displayed in the image, together with the currently displayed image - I know the increases in file size seem to suggest that much more information is being retained, but try the following as a starting point:

The file you posted here is about 780kB. Open that workbook, select the image (chair) on Sheet 1, remove the "=showpictureimage" formula from the editing box in the formula bar, and notice that the image displayed does not change even though the image has now lost its reference to the image from Sheet 3.

Now save the workbook using a different filename and compare the size of the new workbook with that of the original one. On my system the file size decreased from 780kB to about 467kB.

As I've said, I don't often deal with images so I don't fully understand what's happening here, but the above might be useful as a starting point for further investigation.

Sorry I can't offer any further advice.

    Regards,

    Greg M
