How do I link coluimns together so values from each column stay together.

Hi All,

New to excel forum so please be gentle. I would say I am an intermediate user for excel and ever since starting a proper job I have realised how vast the functions on excel is.

My issue is the following:

I have excel 2010 I would like to link columns (2 or more) together so when I sort one column in ascending oder, the other field it is linked to in the other column will also move with it.

EG:

A B
1 Name Score
2 James 3
3 Frank 1
4 Anne 2

when column B is sorted in ascending order it will be:

A B
1 Name Score
2 Frank 1
3 Anne 2
4 James 3

I read somewhere that you must highlight both columns then "Sort A to Z" but an error box pops up saying the command I chose cannot be carried out on multiple selections.

Can someone pelase show me the way on how to do this?

Thanks in advance,

Hi, welcome to the forum

If the columns are next to each other, they should sort together. If that is not working, then just highlight both/all columns and then do your sort - make sure that yoour highlighted "block" is 1 biog block that covers the entire range, not a few smaller 1's

If that doesnt work for you, upload a small (clean) sample workbook (not a pic) of what you are working with, and what your expected outcome would look like.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools

Hi FDibbins,

Thank you so much for a speedy response.

I have tried doing what you suggested but I must be doing something wrong. Attached you will find a sample of the workbook I am working with. My aim is sort column A in ascending order which will also move the respective values in column C.

I.e (from the sample file) where ever the value currenlty in A6 goes after being sorted, its respective value in C6 will also will also move with it.

Thanks once again .

Looks like the problem is that you have merged cells. If you unmerge columns C & D, then highlight A1 thru C9, then do a sort, let it know you have headers, and sort by column A, and you should be good to go.
