View Side by Side?

I can't pinpoint the timing of my issue. I just got the windows 10 upgrade on a machine I've had for a few weeks using office 2010.

I have a few everyday files pinned to my taskbar and they all open in separate windows and the ability to view them side by side isn't available. However if I open them using file > open and then navigate to the file location I'm able to go to a side by side view with as many workbooks as I want if I open them using this method. This kind of defeats the point of having them pinned for easy access though.

Maybe this example helps:
- I open 3 files that I have pinned to my taskbar.
- I can take one of those workbooks and go to file > open and then open another notebook.
- By doing this in the same window I can use the control+tab and flip between these 2 workbooks, but I cannot with the other 2 workbooks I opened via the pinned taskbar.

I've tried googling and to no avail. I'm not sure if I need them opened in the same window and excel is by default opening each workbook in its own separate window? Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

According to a thread on the MS forums (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...ceadf44?auth=1), this is what you need to do:
Click 'File', then 'Options', then 'Advanced', then scroll down to the 'General' section and uncheck the box labelled 'Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)'.

Re: View Side by Side?

I've already done that and to no avail...

Maybe it's worth noting that each file I open using my pinned files opens in a new occurrence of excel and therefore a new window.

Re: View Side by Side?

Try the advice from here: http://www.ozgrid.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158173
Step 1 is what I already suggested, but Step 2 onwards might work.

If nothing from there works, it might be a problem with an add-in (as referred to here: http://dailydoseofexcel.com/archives...#comment-73558) - if you have any add-ins, maybe try disabling them and see if that makes a difference?

Good luck.

Thats your problem there. If you want to "arrange" excel windows, then all those files need to be opened in te same instance of excel. By opening them each in their own instance of excel, it's like opening Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Internet explorer, and trying to "arrange windows" from inside excel.

If you have a "set" or excel files that you always open together, try using the WorkSpace option (I am running 2013, and apparently that option has been removed) With WorkSpace, you open a few excel files, arrange them as needed, and SaveAs .xlw
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools

I can try that, but that's not my problem. Your solution feels like a bandaid- no offense, but I'm extremely frustrated. I know I need them all to open in the same instance, but that's the problem they don't. Each file I open starts a new instance of excel- I've validated that by using the task master. If I have 5 excel open (or any office file type) I have 5 instances of excel running. I had this functionality with windows 7 (only having one instance of excel, word, etc), but since the upgrade to 10 there have been some tweaks I've had to work through.

It is not a band-aid, it is a powerful tool for opening a set of files in specific locations - that is what it was designed for (and I have no idea why they dropped it from 2013)

You set it up once, arranging all the windows as you want, Save As, then when you want to open them all again, you just open that single .xlw file - and ALL the "contained" files open in the positions you set. I dont use it much now, but I used to use it extensively for up to 10 files

Re: View Side by Side?

My 2 cents worth and not sure if this is the solution you want.

I think the issue is caused by the pinning of those spreadsheets. Every time you access the file via the taskbar, you are telling it to open it in a new instance of Excel. Does double clicking an on Excel file, say from the desktop opens it in a new instance of Excel too?
