I have a list of asset numbers 6 digit from 1 to 999999 is there any way to get excel to keep the zeros i.e. 000001 as it always defaults to 1

Custom format the cells to 000000 and it'll work.

Note that that does not change the underlying values - they are still numbers in the range from 1 to 999999, which just happen to look like they have leading zeros.
