Angry Excel Table merged cells (Layout Tools)

Why does MS OFFICE (2007) allow for the same type of tables in Word that is in Excel to be able to merge cells, but not in Excel? You would think this would be a feature that would be available in all MS OFFICE tables. Has someone figured out how to merge cells in the Excel table? Please advise. Thank you

In Excel Tables, you cant merge cells, and trust me, you dont want to.. The purpose of having an excel table (With Heders and Rows like a database) is defeated If merging cells is allowed..

For example, you cant have 2 columns share the same name in Access or SQL Server or any other database for that matter.

    Not sure of word though.

If you mean the Structured Tables in excel, then no, you cannot merge headings. Each column has to have it's own heading. or the table will not be created

With a regular tabulated set of data - with ordinary rows and columns, you can merge to your heart's content. However, I would caution against merging cells in excel - ever! Merging can cause all sorts of problems with formulas, so all experts advise not using merged cells if at all possible
