    Web Query Issue

    Hi all.

I have a series of spreadsheets that download football (soccer) data from a particular site.

For some reason I can no longer access this website with a web query. I can create web queries to other websites with no problems.

But for this particular website I get a Script error as follows:

'Object doesn't support property or method 'indexof'

and I wonder if this is the problem.

I was using Excel 2013 on Windows 10, but I have gone back to Excel 2007 on Windows 8.1 (the setup when it last worked) in an attempt to clear the issue, but I am having the same problem.

As I say, this was working fine a few months ago, but I've come back to it and it's broken!

Just to also add that existing data connections to this website still work, but I cannot create new ones. I have also tried web queries to this website using 'LibreOffice' and 'Google Docs' and these are both able to extract data with no issues.

Please could anyone help me solve this?

    The website in question is:

    http://www.soccerstats.com

    Thank you.

    Matthew

    Re: Web Query Issue

    Hi Matthew,

Although this is a new project to me and I have never had it working, I'm having the same problem with the same website and I was wondering if you'd had any luck with solving it?

For what it's worth, after searching "Object doesn't support property or method 'index0f" and mooching around the web a bit, it seems it's an issue between Java-script and Internet Explorer. Maybe there's a way we can somehow over-ride which browser Excel uses for Web queries?

I hope someone much cleverer than me can come up with a solution to this because copying and pasting data for 170+ football matches on a Saturday morning, (soon rising to 300+), is not my idea of fun!

    Please heeeelp!

    Re: Web Query Issue

    Hi Yatesy,

    No solution as yet.

I have looked into the possibility of bypassing Internet Explorer, but with Excel & IE both being Microsoft products, it seems it's not possible.

I've spent the last few days re-writing my spreadsheets for manual results entry. I follow 34 leagues but they don't all play their seasons at the same time, so maybe only half of those will need to be updated at any one time. Then, given that the matches are played throughout the week that hopefully means I may only have to update, say 3 to 5 leagues a day - maybe 30 to 50 results. It's not ideal, but I just decided to take control of my own data, having had quite a few issues in the past with the web query.

Besides, you can always add a worksheet and paste raw data there, then use a formula to clean up the data. Then just copy and paste (values only) the resulting data to your working spreadsheet.

Sorry I can't provide a better solution. If you come across one yourself, please do share it with me

    Matthew

    PS.........

When my web query was working, it was awesome!!

    Hi Matthew,

    Interesting developments......

I've kind of got it to work in a round about way.

Try this. Pick a website which you know you can create a fully functioning Web Query. Start the Macro recorder and set up the Query. Once you've finished stop the Macro recorder and go to Macros and click edit on the Macro that you've just made. Now replace the URL in the macro for the soccerstats URL run the macro. This works well for me and with a bit of tinkering I'll be able to achieve what I'm after. Hope this helps you too.

    Hi Yatesy.

    That's a really clever workaround.

Have you actually made it work like this yet?

I tried it but had a 'debug' message. I most probably messed it up somewhere. I'll give it another try tomorrow.

    Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated

    Re: Web Query Issue

The problem I believe lies in that there are no tables recognizable by Excel on that website. They must have changed the way the website is constructed from the time that it last worked properly.

    Hi Matthew,

Give this a go, it should import the Premiership table and stats, although you might be better trying this in a new workbook until you've honed it to your needs.

Open a new workbook, create a Command Button, use the code below behind your button, give it a click and Robert's your mother's brother

    Hope this helps you out.

    Re: Web Query Issue soccerstats

    Hi

Just stumbled across this as I am trying to fix the same issue.

The warning comes up when trying to do the web query but if you click on the 'show/hide icon' button it will let me import the page, I can then pull the relevant info from there.

However it seems to work for every page apart from when I try and import the goals page eg http://www.soccerstats.com/trends.asp?league=russia and it seems to pull everything but the bits that i want!!!
Does anyone have any idea how I can resolve this problem please?!?

I am looking to do a football predictor spreadsheet so if anyone is on a similar project and fancies a chat then please contact me.

    Cheers
    m

That macro is awesome by the way - I was having exactly the same problem with the same website. Slightly annoying that it imports the whole sheet rather than one table but excel formulae and macros can easily fix that once and for all. We should compare spreadsheets when done, no doubt we are doing similar things ;-)

Thanks. I had it working from the start of the season OK. Now it shows nothing and an error. Your workaround has worked.

    Re: Web Query Issue

    Hi Readings, jwmanners & Radarat111

I'm glad that the workaround has helped.

Readings and jwmanners, I love the idea of sharing thoughts on our speadsheets although all I'm doing is creating true odds based on recent form. Simply turning percentage into probability and finally to odds format. Using set parameters, say 2/5 for a home win for example, I then flag up matches with potential for a bet. And that's it, just a sheet to highlight which matches I should concentrate on. The identification of an actual bet for me is always as a result of studying the match the old fashioned way I'm afraid so sorry to disappoint but there is no magic formula here.
