    Combo box dropdown misbehaving

    G'day Excel Forum

    I’ve been following a method I found on the net for building a search bar with suggestions dropdown (like a Google search), described here; http://trumpexcel.com/tag/excel-search/

    It’s worked quite well however I am having a small issue with it;

    Weirdly whenever I click on any button, tick any checkbox or hit enter after typing anything elsewhere in my sheet, the search suggestions box I’ve built using this method drops down for no apparent reason (see attachment).

    Has anyone any idea why it might be doing this? Could it perhaps be clashing with another code or have something to do with the version of excel I'm using (2010)?

    Would appreciate any insight you'd have

    Regards

    MattRNR

    P.S. I've hidden the helper columns in the 'Entry Number' column, in the complete version of the spreadsheet these will be hidden by formatting.

    I tried to duplicate the issue you are having, and it didn't' happen to me at all.

    Using Excel 2010, I can't do anything with your workbook. In addition to what you describe, the macros don't work for me...all kinds of errors.

    Hmm how frustrating... I will rebuild the spreadsheet from scratch and upload it again if the problem persists

    Re: Combo box dropdown misbehaving

    G'day again... I've completely rebuilt the spreadsheet with the same result.

    If anyone has any thought I would appreciate them.

    P.S. I've re-post to the forum here http://www.excelforum.com/excel-gene...ml#post4229175, I'm not sure if that is appropriate or not, but I'm really up the creek on this one so I thought I'd try to get as many eye's over this as I can.

    Re: Combo box dropdown misbehaving

    I had no problems with the workbook. It seems to work as designed. Excel however didn't close properly after loading and using the workbook the first time. After, I tried it again and it closed properly.

    Might be. Try a repair of Office. Control Panel, Programs and Features, Microsoft Office, Change, Repair.

    Maybe repairing office is the way to go - after trying your download, I had no issues but Excel crashed when I was dumping your book

    G'day Again

    I've repaired office, tried the workbook on my desktop again, the uni computers and my neighbors computer. All with the same result... combo box pops up repeatedly... Any thoughts?

    Try disabling add-ins if you have any installed.

    Re: Combo box dropdown misbehaving

    I was FINALLY able to reproduce what you are asking about. I haven't quite figured out why it is doing it, but I do know that it has to do with this particular code that is in the search sheet...
    Please Login or Register to view this content.
    If I comment out the above code, the issue you are asking about does not happen. As soon as I use the sheet without it being commented out, the searchbox drops down again.

    G'day gmr4evr1

    Really comforting to know someone else is seeing what I am seeing I was beginning to think I was going mad.

    Forgive my ignorance but when you say 'comment out' what does that mean? This is actually my first bit of VBA ever...

    Re: Combo box dropdown misbehaving

    Yea, it took a bit to see it happen, but when it did I was like ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, that's what he's talking about.
    Normally your code looks like this...
    Please Login or Register to view this content.
    When you "Comment it out", it looks like this
    Please Login or Register to view this content.
    And highlights the text green.
    So basically, commenting it out means adding a ' before each line

    Re: Combo box dropdown misbehaving

    Haha, ah my apologies my explanations can be a tad useless...

    I gave this a go; it is preventing the problem of the drop down occurring elsewhere in the sheet however it's also preventing the search suggestions from appearing when I'm typing in the combo box itself.

    Have I perhaps modified the code wrong?

    'Private Sub ComboBox1_Change()
    'ComboBox1.ListFillRange = "DropDownList"
    'Me.ComboBox1.DropDown
    'End Sub

    It should function as in the GIF at the top of the original method link (http://trumpexcel.com/2013/10/excel-...h-suggestions/) when the combo box is being typed in, but not when typing is being undertaken elsewhere in the workbook...

    Regards

    MattRNR
