    Combining Data

How do you combine multiple rows together which have different data? For example:

    1 2 3 4
    A Joe Doe 123 NULL
    B Joe Doe NULL 111

So, basically I just want to be able to make them 1 row:

    A Joe Doe 123 111..

Hoping for exact instructions since I'm not the greatest at Excel, and it may be good to note that I'm actually working with an Excel sheet with 68,000 rows with MANY duplicates similar to this.

    Re: Combining Data

How many columns need to match to be declared a duplicate?

Also, are you only replacing NULL cells with values or do you ever need to combine values?

    Re: Combining Data

Are you using A and B as row numbers and 1234 as column numbers in your example?

Would this ever require combining more than two rows?

Are the rows to be combined ever going to be separate?

    Re: Combining Data

The columns needed to be matched depends on the number of rows there are with that columns info. The best way I can explain it is that I've got FOUR columns: FirstName, LastName, Driver'sLis#, and SocialSec#. It's a government database of sorts.

When a name is entered into a system, depending on who enters that information it could create multiple entries.

    Here's a good example:

    John Doe ABC123 111-11-1111
    John Doe ABC123 NULL
    John DoesABC123 NULL
    John Do NULL 111-111-1111
    John Doe ABC124 111-12-1111

Basically, I'm trying to eliminate multiple instances of data because of erroneous end-user input into the spreadsheet. Since humans have entered the data which is fed into a database, lets say they don't SEE the other instances of John Doe in that feed--so, similar instances of John Doe get created, and that makes for lots of "duplicate" entries.

So, to try to answer your questions (thank you for the responses btw!!) ......

I'd like to combine/consolidate/whatever the entries in a way that really cleans this up. Per the above example, the obvious solution would be to select all of the John Doe entries and create ONE, nice row that says: John Doe ABC123 111-11-1111, since I know that the others were mis-types.
