    Chart Series Data Definition Example?

    Hello,

I'm trying to figure out how to get charts to do what I want, to change and rearrange them at will.

I'm playing with adding a secondary axis to a regular column chart manually after the chart is already created.

When I try to change ot combo chart even after adding data it tells me to select at least two series of data.

I'm trying to understand in my mind exactly what one series of data consists of. The definition I've found does not compute. I am not after any particular solution for a chart I'm just trying to understand the concepts and how to go about things.

This is probably a really basic, easy thing but I have been struggling and trying many things to get it for a couple days off and on. I'm getting close now though.

    Thank you.

Re: Chart Series Data Definition Example?

In the context of a column chart, a data series consists of one set of y values.

In the example chart from this tutorial for older versions of Excel (https://support.office.com/en-us/art...0-E9AB353C4C00 ), the horizontal axis labels are in A2:A6 of the data table. Data series #1 is the data in column B (B2:B6), Data Series #2 is the data in column C (C2:C6), and so on through the 4 data series they use.

When you want to have both a primary and a secondary axis system in an Excel chart, there must be at least 2 data series -- At least one data series to be assigned to the primary axis system, and at least one data series to assign to the secondary axis system. (Another 2007 help file, but I think the instructions are still essentially the same for 2013 https://support.office.com/en-us/art...8-e1a2e14dd5a9 ).
