    Sort multiple cells?

I've run in to a little problem.

For 4-5 days i have sorted out about 8000 clients from a database of 17000 to im gonna send out mail.

The problem is that i have managed to sort the names from A>Z without managing to sort the adresses to these clients and saved it as a new file.

So now i have the full clientlist (Original) where the names and adresses match. And i have a clientlist(Edited) with the people i will send the mail to where the names and adresses dont match.

My question is: Is there any way i can search for all the names included in (Edited) list and filter these from the (Original) list?

Or do I have to do it alla over again?

    Kind Regards

    Kristoffer

Use Index/Match or VLookup to match the names from the sorted list to the names in the original list. Once you have the formula populated in all the cells, select the cells, copy them and, without selecting anywhere else, Paste Special | Values.

    Re: Sort multiple cells?

Thank you so much for your help and quick reply. I still have some problems understanding how the formula work, even after reading in different types of forums how to use Index/match and vlookup.

    My example is:
In the original file i have:

In column A2:A14000 the names of my clients
    In column B2:B14000 their adresses
For example the adress for the client in A55 is matching the adress in B55

    And in the Edited file:
8000 of the client i will send mail in A2:A8000
However they are not syncronized with the adresses in B2:B8000
All of this because i made a mistake sorting earlier on.

I would be very thankful if you could explain the formula for me with an example.

    Thank you again

    /kristoffer

    Re: Sort multiple cells?

You can either have both workbooks open and match from the edited workbook to the original or, for convenience, copy the original worksheet to the same workbook as the edited worksheet. That would be my preference.

So, let's assume you copy the original data to a new sheet in the edited list workbook. Once it's copied, close the original workbook to put it out of harm's way. Double click on the tab and change the name to "original", no quotes.

Now, in B2 in the edited sheet, type the formula:
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.
and press Enter. It should return the address for the matching name. Then copy the cell and paste it to all the other (populated) cells in column B. When they have been populated and calculated, select all the cells, copy them and, without selecting any other cell, Paste Special | Values. That will overwrite the formulae with values. You can now delete the copied original data worksheet.

    Regards, TMS
