Large Company Vacation Planner

I was wondering if anyone had set up a vacation planner in excel for a large multi-team company. I am trying to set one up for the company I am working for now and struggling to find a template that is going to work.

Any help and tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated.

For a small office, Excel is a reasonable tool for this. When you start having more than about 2 dozen employees, Excel starts becoming the wrong tool and a database becomes the tool of choice.

How many people are in your organization? What other HR software do you have in place? Do you have access to this database so you can look up employee numbers and how much vacation time they are authorized for the year? Does your company have a comp time policy to add to days of vacation? Do you need the vacation software to interface with payroll? What kinds of vacation do you have (regular, carry-over, bereavement, military leave, ...).

I doubt you are going to find an existing template to meet your specific needs.

However, if I were going to design one, I would make it transaction based, meaning that time taken and earned would case a transaction to occur. These transactions would be summed up to give the current total. Do not adjust the original quantity. It's basically an inventory system where instead of so many boxes of X, Y, Z you have time and instead of inventory location, you have people.
