Why does Excel Crash with copy paste special values and subtract?

Why does Excel Crash with copy paste special values and subtract?\

    Excel 2007.

    Steps to produce:
    Create new workbook
    On sheet1 Cell A1 input =Sheet2!A1*$B$1
    On sheet1 Cell B1 input = 0.31
    On sheet2 Cell A1 input = 0

    Open another new workbook
    On sheet1 Cell A1 input = 35

    Now
Copy sheet1 Cell A1 workbook 2 (35), paste special into workbook 1 sheet1 Cell A1 and paste special values and subtract at the same time.
    Excel then crashes.

    Why?

    Thanks

I was able to reproduce this in Excel 2013 on Windows 10. I was very surprised; I figured that whatever caused this would be resolved after two more releases. This is a bug in Excel. Any time it crashes on a small simple file with a straightforward operation it's almost certainly a bug.

By the way you did an excellent job of providing the steps to reproduce. We often get posts that are like the first line of your post and stop there.

Re: Why does Excel Crash with copy paste special values and subtract?

Thank you. The only way I have been able to get around it is to paste value of the formula first and then subtract. Strangely paste values and add works just fine. Also you don't have to use those values, any values will still make it crash. Also seems to be related to copying values from another workbook. If you copy a value from within the workbook (like another sheet), paste values and subtract works just fine.

Since you are a moderator, do you submit the bug or does MS monitor this forum? How do bugs that are reported here get resolved?

We have no relationship with Microsoft. We have no official avenue for reporting bugs to them that is not available to the general public. I have posted this to a Microsoft forum that is frequented by Microsoft staff, but I don't know what will happen from there.
