Turning qualitative data into pie charts

    Hi all

I have a massive document from a survey that was run.

Questions were open ended, asking why users loved a particular brand. So their answers tend to focus around the same sorts of things, e.g. prices, products on offer etc.
    I found this thread: http://www.excelforum.com/excel-gene...tive-data.html
that as great when it comes to counting instances of a single phrase or word, such as 'great prices'. But what I need to do is count a variety of similar answers, e.g. 'great price' and 'good price' and have one total for the idea (that prices are great).

Is there a formula to run that i can include a variety of phrases in OR is it better to set up a bunch of formulas to count each phrase I'm looking for?

    Thanks!

If you know what the phrases are then you could use something like:

    Formula: copy to clipboard

But if there could be many phrases this could be a long winded approach.
Perhaps some sample data and expected outcomes would help provide a better solution.

Thanks! Is there a way to get the total number of mentions of each of those phrases?

That very much depends on your data layout. Could we see a sample of it?

Wouldn't need much data. Just a sample of what you're trying to sum. No personal data required at all.

Copy some of the data you're summing into a new workbook and post that. Details on how do post documents below:

Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and then scroll down to Manage Attachments to open the upload window (or use the paperclip icon).

Well done for getting the sample uploaded. Now how about some idea of what you're trying to sum exactly? Maybe some manually created results? Not many, just a few and some kind of explanation of how you arrived at the figures.

    Sure.

here I've used the formula in the first thread I mentioned to count instances of 'variety' and 'range' of products. These are both the same thought - just expressed differently. Ideally, i'd like to be able to count all instances of a 'variety' and 'range' within the same formula, rather than having to set up a bunch of formulas. Does this make more sense:

The below formula would give you the combined result of your two formulas:
    Formula: copy to clipboard

Note the use of *'s. These are wildcards and negate the need to use SEARCH or FIND.

Is that of any help to you?

One thing to watch out for is if a cell contains both "variety of" and "range of" it will be counted twice.
