    Seriation Graphs

    Hello to all,

I'm currently struggling with Excel 2007 and I need to produce a seriation graph. I've searched the web and did a search here and no luck.

Is it even possible to graph data using the a seriation graph in Excel?
    If so, How?

    Thanks in advance,
    Schmoikel

    Welcome to the forum.

Post some data, and we'll both have a learning experience.

    Thanks for the welcome.

I've attached a sample excel file with some data.
The seriation graph that you see on the right hand side is 'fake'. I just made some rectangles based on the numbers and sized them accordingly.

I'm not even sure if Excel can make such a graph but if it's possible, I'm sure the people here can figure it out.

The seriation graph is used in archaeology to date an artifact. For example, by looking at the telephone we can see how much it has changed from it's humble beginnings to the present. If we didn't have any actual dates, we could still infer a timeline.

The data in the sample shows grave markers and the 'art' that was depicted on them. The numbers in columns B,C, and D are the totals found. The Death's Head was the earliest, followed by the Cherub, and finally the Willow. You never see any willows at the same time of the Death's Head.
The bars show a representation of the numbers.

Not sure if that cleared things up.

I have no idea what REPT is or Block but if I'm looking at it right, that's what you did.

REPT is a function you can find in Help.

Block is a name I created to refer to the Full Block character, which I got from Insert Symbol. Look in Insert > Name > Define.

I think the presentation on the right of this attachment conveys better.

If you're good to go, would you please the thread as solved?

    Re: Seriation Graphs

It uses simple formulas, all shown, that use the the raw data directly as arguments.
