Excel changes column widths at row 976? How can I stop this?

I have a very long Excel spreadsheet of songs, and I have song/artist/etc set up to take up the whole width of my screen. But once I pass row 976, the columns become shifted over and my settings no longer fit in the screen. I believe this happens because at the bottom, that is the first time column 1000 comes up. Is there any way to keep the numbers on the far left a consistent length?

Thanks

I couldn't find a way to adjust the width of the numbers column. However, you can turn them off.

Instruction can be found here:

http://excelribbon.tips.net/T011677_...ow_Labels.html

Also under the Show section of the View menu/ribbon there is a button for "Headings". Deselect it to turn off the row number and column letters.

Hope this works for you.

Thanks, I saw that solution, and it worked except one thing: I need the headings kept because without them I can't change the organization system. For example, it is currently organized by song, but if I wanted to change it to be organized by artist, I couldn't do that without the heading there. I know it's petty, but I don't feel like switching it on and off every time I want to change the order.

Not sure about 2007 (I think it should be the same) but in 2016 you can display/not display just the row numbers without affecting the column letters?
(and I think southward meant the column letter headings, not your typed in headings)
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

If I go to page layout and de-select "headings" they both turn off. And I know Southward meant the column letter headings and not my custom headings, but if I can't click the columned letter headings I can't highlight the whole row and click "alphabetize."

If you haven't already, you can give your top row unique header names. Then set a filter on the top row selecting the top row, select Filter under the "Sort & Filter", Data menu/ribbon.
The filters that are applied will allow you to "alphabetize".

I have done that but how do you highlight the whole column without the header? When the letters and numbers are there you can just click on it and it will highlight everything. But if those numbers/letters aren't there, you can't highlight the whole column, right?
