Excel Doesn't Recognize All Values in Line Chart

    Good Evening

I have an Excel line chart which is made up of $ values for 19 years. After creating the line, I click on the line and Excel highlights most but not all of the data points for the 19 years. I converted the chart to columns and clicked on the columns and the same thing happened. I googled the problem and followed the advice: check for text numbers, spaces, to no avail.

Please advise on how I can resolve this problem.

    Thank you.

    Al

Re: Excel Doesn't Recognize All Values in Line Chart

    Hello alcharbonneau,

It is difficult to comment without seeing the data. Is there a pattern to the missing data points?

I know that #NA values are ignored by charts, is this a possibility?

You said you have 19 years of data - how many data points per annum?

Are you using dates on your x axis? I have had some success with date related problems in charts by using text instead of dates. (Just create a new row or column which picks up a text version of the date, and use that).

I hope this helps, please let me know!

    Regards,

    David

Re: Excel Doesn't Recognize All Values in Line Chart

    Hi David

Thank you for responding. I have attached a file illustrating the problem. As you will note, not all the values along the line are highlighted when you click on the line. I have tried this file and on two computers with the same results.

    Appreciate your help.

Re: Excel Doesn't Recognize All Values in Line Chart

I have noticed this same behavior before, but had always simply chalked it up to "Excel is too lazy to highlight every single point above a certain number of data points". However, if you scroll through the data series (left/right arrows after selecting the data series), all 20 points are recognized and present.

I think the behavior you are describing is simply an "efficiency" thing. When selecting a data series (more than 16 data points in my version of Excel), Excel only highlights enough data points to show that "this is the series that is selected". It is not trying to completely describe the data series.

Unless I am misunderstanding you. If you are seeing a real problem, please explain where Excel is not recognizing individual data points, because, as I indicated, I can scroll through the data series and see that all data points are recognized and plotted correctly.

Re: Excel Doesn't Recognize All Values in Line Chart

    Hi

Thank you for responding. I first noticed this problem when trying to change the formatting of 20 columns, each representing an annual $ amount between 1996 and 2015. Excel didn't engage every column which meant that I couldn't change the format for all columns at the same time. I just tried to create a line with fewer value and then clicked on it and it engaged all values which suggests that your 'lazy Excel" theory is probably correct.

Thank you for answering my question.
