May be go to the navigation tab and go to View and then Freeze Panes , select unfreeze pane.

Start Excel in safe mode then have a look at what Add-Ins are defined...
no one is psychic - it helps if you mention "what kind of pane" it is in your [first] post! That's not the kind pane I'm talking about

How do I open in safe mode?
Don Cole
Use User-Initiated Safe mode
1.Click Start, point to All Programs, and then point to Microsoft Office.
2.Press and hold the CTRL key, and then click the name of the Microsoft Office program that you want to run
You may be prompted if you want to start in Safe Mode, click Yes.
If that starts ok an add-in might be at fault, go to File, Excel Options, Add-ins, in the Manage box select Add-ins, click on Go and deselect all the add-ins and restart Excel normally. If Excel start normally without the panel, go back to the Add-ins and select 1 add-in and restart Excel. Repeat until the problem comes back.
If that doesn't solve the problem, go to the Control Panel, Programs and Features. Select Microsoft Office and click on CHANGE then select REPAIR then CONTINUE.

I think that pane comes about when Excel did not close down properly in the past, and so it is giving you the chance to try to recover any files that may have been affected. I haven't seen it for a long time, so I can't remember all the options associated with it.
