    copy a block of 4

    I am having a problem, My copy will only go in one direction .. either down or across.

    It may be a function that is stuck because when I stop the drag it gives me the sequential date from the first cell. I am trying to copy and excel thinks I want sequential.

    Any help on this will be great appreciated.

    Hi Crimescene and welcome to the forum,

    This sounds like a problem with Absolute vs Relative addressing of your cells formulas.

    and if my guess isn't close then attach a sample file showing what you have and what your answer should look like.

    Re: copy a block of 4

    I never realized that excel did that with dates so I'm not sure of the best fix, but I do know that this will work in the meantime...
    Right click the cell you want to copy
    click copy
    highlight ALL the cells you want to paste the date to
    right click
    click paste
    Again, it may not be the best solution, it's just a "quick-fix"

    I dont think that is the answer I am looking for.

    What I am trying to do is highlight a section of excel so I can only print that part of it.

    when I drag and release the drag instead of highlighting the area it changes to sequential numbers from the first cell.

    OK, when you "drag" from the bottom right hand corner using the little square, it will do what you are describing. If you want to just highlight cells, click in the cell and then "drag".....without using the bottom right corner.

    Instead of selecting with the mouse, you can enter the range in the NAME field left of the formula bar and above the row numbers. If you enter E5:G16 and hit enter, that range on the worksheet will be selected.

    @gmr4evr1
    You're welcome.
    That trick comes in handy when selecting very large ranges that may have spaces that prevent Ctrl + Shift + Arrow to work properly. In addition, it is very quick.

    I believe the easiest way to do this is highlight the square you want move.

    Hit ctl+c (copy)

    Go to what will be upper left cell of our new position.

    Hit ctl+v (paste)

    Re: copy a block of 4

    Just to further what I suggested in msg#8, lets say that you want to copy the range B14:D25 to a range starting in H14. In the name box enter B14:D25 hit enter then Ctrl + C then enter H14 in the name box hit enter then Ctrl + V. That will copy the range to another location without moving the mouse.

    @newdoverman
    I'm going to try really hard to remember to do that in the cases of large ranges. I've learned so many tricks since I've joined this forum I've had to make a list of them.

    Using that method, if you know the ranges and the destination sure saves a lot of scrolling around the worksheet. If copying to a different worksheet, enter the worksheet name with cell reference, hit enter and Ctrl + V and the copy will be made on the referenced worksheet at the specified location.
