Inclusion of Free Solver in Excel 2013

I am running Office/Excel 2013 on Windows 10. I have workbooks that have, in previous Windows/Excel combinations, been able to run a free version of Solver that was included in those Excel versions. The workbook file has an xlsm file type. When I try to run previously successful macro that uses Solver, it fails to find Solver. The Add-In Manager shows an advanced and costly variant of Solver as being present, but the Solver Password and Activation Code that I have comes from an email from Solver in which I am allowed to use this advanced version for only 15 days. Is there a way to obtain a free version that supports Excel 2013?

I may be missing something, and I don't currently have Excel 2013 installed so I cannot check but this link implies you just have to install the Add-in.

Many thanks, TMS. I have followed your instructions and if I have more trouble, and I don't expect to, I am sure it will be because of my lack of skill.

No, I am not being ripped off. The people at Solver.com were being extremely forthcoming in offering me their very impressive products, all of which are out of my reach financially and intellectualy.

    You're welcome.

I thought you were being asked to pay for something that is built into Excel and just needs activating. If they are offering a more powerful and sophisticated tool, then it is up to you, and your pocket, to decide whether or not you want to invest in it. Clearly, you do not

    Hi prschoef

As you say you are running Excel 2013 I would suggest you update your forum profile as this shows you runnig Excel 2003.

I just updated as you suggested.

I have installed the free Solver per suggestion, and I can run it, but I can't run it in my VBA macro. I get a dialog saying, "file not found rspaddin.xll." I get this even when running a newly recorded macro activating Solver and setting up a problem.

Did you set a reference to Solver, and remove any reference to the other version?

Re: Inclusion of Free Solver in Excel 2013

But Excel 2013 should come with a "normal" excel solver and you have got
The Add-In Manager shows an advanced and costly variant of Solver as being present
the risk solver with all the bells and wistles that "FrontlineSolvers" have managed to add to it.

The "Risk Solver Platform’s" main program file RSPAddin.xll is a COM add-in, an XLL add-in, and a COM server. So the error message I think tells you that your 15 days of free testing is over and if you wish to use this model you have to pay.

Perhaps you should contact " Frontline Solvers Customer Service" and see what they can do.

Is there a way to obtain a free version that supports Excel 2013?
Depends a bit on your status i.e. if you are a student you could perhaps get it for free, see link

Re: Inclusion of Free Solver in Excel 2013

Alf & SHG, thanks for following up on my continuing thread.

I suppose I am still hosting the advanced Solver, and I'll contact the Frontline folks.

The Solver appearing in my Data tab is Solver.xlam.
The Add-Ins tab shows only Avery, no Solver, in the Menu Commands area. The Developer tab Add-Ins entry shows a list of
add-ins and Solver with a check by it. The others are unchecked. File/Options/Add-Ins shows Solver as active and
Analytic Solver as inactive. Yesterday I found another extensive list of programmatic items that
included redundant entries and items that seemed to modify Office. The list was in the VBA editor and found by Tools/References.
It had more than one Solver; Solver, but not Analytic Solver was checked. ???

The Frontline Support page says Excel 2013 requires use of Solver "in the cloud." I have a pathological distrust of the "cloud." Frontline says that to solve locally I must have desktop Excel. What is that? Does this mean my version is too advanced for me to use? Can I modify my 2013 version to obtain compatibility between Solver and Excel 2013 data stored on my computer (for instance by a compatibility alteration of Excel or Solver)?
