    Histogram Help

    Hi:

I am trying to create a "Histogram" chart out of the data analysis tool pack... showing the curve factoring in the HP and Total Hours listed in columns B and C.

Each row accounts for an individual order out of column A.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Re: Histogram Help

Do you have any examples of failed attempts, or a better explanation of exactly how you want to perform the analysis? The raw data alone does not help me understand what you are trying to do.

The approach I would expect to creating a histogram:

    1) Determine the quantity you want to analyze. Your post says that you want something that factors in both HP and total hours, but you do not explain how you want to factor in both quantities. If HP stands for "horsepower" (or some other "time rate of doing something"), then a product of HP with time might be an appropriate analysis variable (horsepower * time would equal total energy). My speculation aside, figure out how you want to factor in both HP and time, and add that function into column D (If my speculation is correct, something like =PRODUCT(B2:C2) in D2 and copied down).
    2) Enter the desired series of "bins" for the histogram in a suitable column. You will need to decide how many bins you want and what values to put in those bins based on what you get for the analysis variable from step 1.
3a) alternative 1: Call the histogram utility from the data analysis menu, point it to the analysis variable range and the bins range, and tell it to create the frequency table and histogram.
3b) alternative 2: Use the FREQUENCY() function to calculate the frequencies for each bin. then insert a column chart based on the bins range and the results of the FREQUENCY() function and format so that it looks like a histogram.

What step do you get stuck on?

    Re: Histogram Help

    Hello:

The end goal is focused around HP.. Horsepower.

I originally was bucketing the HP in 25% buckets. Taking the 1st 25% of orders via horsepower amount and bucketing those together.

Ideally have a Pareto chart that shows it in a histogram graph via horsepower to show the chart curves.

Thx again. Sorry amateur at this one.

Can you share what the results of this analysis were? What kind of chart did you end up with? What worked well and what did you want to be different?

I find that a lot of charting questions end up being about how to generate and arrange the data in the spreadsheet. Once you have the data in the spreadsheet, creating the chart is often fairly easy (in the case of a Pareto chart, it should be a simple column + line combination chart -- here's a tutorial on creating a column+line combination chart https://support.office.com/en-us/art...0-EC33F588243F once the data is calculated).

Without more information on the analysis you want to perform, I don't know what recommendation to make for the analysis. The data seem rather skewed towards the smaller horsepowers, but I don't know if that is significant or not.

Perhaps as a start, you might bin on quartiles. Use the =QUARTILE() function to return the max min and each quartile (https://support.office.com/en-us/art...2-8451041e1a2a ), then use that set of values as your bins. Build your histogram (using the steps I mentioned above) on that and see what you get. If nothing else, that should allow you to see the overall steps needed to create a histogram. After you understand the basic steps to building a histogram, you can then figure out what is right and wrong with the analysis and adapt as needed.
