Double Click to Edit Dropdown Text in Locked Sheet

I have a dropdown that I want users to be able to edit by using the formula bar as well as double clicking where they want to edit text within the dropdown cell after a selection is made. Excel is allowing me to do this as long as the sheet is not protected. Once the sheet is protected (it will always be protected for the users) I can only make changes in the formula bar but it will not allow me to double click within the dropdown cell where I want to make changes.

What happens if, instead of protecting the entire sheet, you protect ALL BUT the cells you need to be able to edit?

Good point Candybg, I forgot to mention that the specific cells are not locked when I right click > Format Cells > Protection > Locked box is not checked
