Help Sorting by date with groups of information

Hello,

Probably pretty basic, but I'm having an issue sorting data by date because all of the cells aren't filled in on the excel sheet. For example:

Number	Animal	Date
555-1111	Cat	07/19/2016
	Dog	06/19/2016
555-2222	Snake	05/12/2015
	Turtle	04/13/2016
	Bird	03/12/12

I'm trying to sort by date, but when I do, all the dates sort, but then it messes up the rest of the data. I basically need to group blocks of cells and then sort on the date. I've tried grouping and sorting, and it isn't doing anything (I'll sort and nothing happens).

Any ideas? Sorry if I didn't explain this well enough.

If I understand what you want, I think this is most easily accomplished by "filling in" the blanks:

Then, when you sort, you can sort first by column A then by column C

Thanks! This is the way I was going to do it, but thought maybe there was a better way.
