Always prompted to save files containing dates (Excel 2003)

    I'm running Excel 2003.

This has been an annoyance of mine for quite some time. After only viewing (making no changes) an Excel file containing worksheets with dates, Excel always prompts with a "Save changes?" dialog when closing the file.

I have one sheet containing dates of birth and another column with a formula that shows the persons' ages. I can understand why that one prompts me, as the age column always changes, but I wish it wouldn't. In another worksheet, though, all I have is data containing formatted dates and I still get the prompt.

    Can this behavior be defeated?

Your workbook is calculating, regardless if you are on the sheet, possibly you have a =today() function or something similar, this will always calculate when you open the workbook, unless you set calculation to manual.

I realize that. But by my logic if _I_ don't make a change to anything, then there's no reason to re-save the file. Any cells displaying something derived from a formula will be correct next time the file is opened. I just realized that in the second file, it's due to a column that's are computed from another, nothing to do with dates.

Maybe I'll just set calculations to manual if that's what it takes.
