Match fishing results and league tables

    Hi All

I would like to create a excel document that automatically updates a league table after entering data.

I wish to create a table for individual fishing matches which I can manually enter the weights of fish caught by each angler (in pounds and ounces). From this, i want the highest weight caught to then automatically gain 10 points (in a separate column), with second place gaining 9 points, third 8 and so on until the tenth person... following this all other members just gain 1 point for attending a match. For the individual match table, i would like the table to auto sort itself so that the winning angler (with the highest weight of fish) is top etc etc.

From the above table, i would like to create a league table which updates automatically following the entering of the weights of fish caught on each match. I would like the leauge table to autmatically add the points for the latest matches, and also the over all total weights of fish caught by each angler. Again, i would like this table to auto sort the rows so that the person with the highest number of points is ranked top of the league etc etc.

I have included a layout that im currently using, but it has no formulas in... I literally manually enter all the data and carry out the maths etc. It looks neat for posting up but is a nightmare to do and very time consuming! If anyone can help then please get in touch. All this may not even be possible for all i know!

Any help with either of the elements would be greatly appreciated! Even more so if someone has a template that is similar!

    Many thanks!

Re: Match fishing results and league tables

I had a bit of fun playing with this... First, take a look without fiddling!!

I have completed three events (sheets 1, 2 & 3). Lbs and oz are awkward... (I like grams, myself), but (in the spirit of much-detested Brexit) I converted everything to Oz (column D) to assign the points at each event (column E).

To add a new event, go to sheet 4. Enter the event name and date in B1 and C1, as usual. Manually enter the weights as previously - but DO enter a few outlandishly big ones to make the differences apparent. The whole table at the top of Summary will have updated with your new data.

Have a play with it. I can explain it later!!

That is absolutely spot on mate! I only wish i knew how you've done it haha

All i ask is how to add new members... i tried it on a match but it didn't seem to appear in summary (league table) page...

Being really picky here but im gobsmacked that you've pretty much got it sussed!

Thanks a lot for your time and effort!

    Good work!

But as an angler myself I do wonder should there no be a column dedicated to the one's that got away?

I may not be sure of their weight in oz/grams but I do know their weight in pounds/ kilos when I tell it to my friends.

    Glen

One other thing (picky i know)...

In the league table, is it possible to have the ranks to automatically sort in ascending order... so rank1 is top... If two members or more have the same number of total points, their total weight should decide they're overall rank.. Sort of like a goal difference in football league tables.... sounds complicated but im sure you have the expertise to resolve this!

    Thanks. Paul

Re: Match fishing results and league tables

As currently set up (all the sheets had to be changed in one way or another!!).

Add new members in Interim Column I. They will auto populate onto ALL of the individual event sheets, but will NOT appear on the summary sheet until they've bagged one. I have allowed you to have 30 members. it's easy for me to fix it at more. How many are you likely to need?

The summary sheet now ranks them in point order, with weights splitting tied results. You can see how I've done that in Interim column L, by adding the total catch weight divided by 1,000,000,000 to the points. So, the total point score will be immaterially different, but (providing the catch weight is also different) each point score will be UNIQUE. if the weight is also identical, currently, we're stuffed. Cut the head off one of them and re-weigh it. The fish that is, not the member....

As before, look at it before fiddling with it.

Now: add a new member. See the name appear on sheets 1 to 10, but not on summary.

Now: complete Sheet 4 with some random data (make some extreme catches for someone)

then muck around with it and try to break it. Please get back to me with the following TWO pieces of information:

    1) Maximum number of members of the club.

    2) Maximum number of events recorded on the sheet (is this a rolling thing, or annual sheet).

In both cases, allow some "spare capacity".

Let me know these bits of info AND any problems you spot (something won't work properly...) and I'll finish the job, before providing any necessary explanations..

Re: Match fishing results and league tables

    Excellent work again Glenn!

Ive had a play but cant seem to find any obvious bugs. All seems to do what i need anyway! At one point it did seem to duplicate a member and their results in the league table (but not in any event pages), but i cant seem to reproduce it again! Which is good i guess...

As for the information you need to finish up....

    1) A maximum of 40 members will be more than enough to future proof the template!

    2) Its a seasonal thing (winter / summer leagues) with approx 15 matches per season. However, again to future proof it then it may be beneficial to extend that to twice as many, 30. *Please note, it did seem to work ok copying the match result table into a new sheet, so i could always add additional ones as and when required??

Please let me know your thoughts! And... when your ready, try to explain how the hell you've done it all! Even though i have a feeling il struggle to understand it all lol

    Thanks again mate!

    Hi Glenn

Apologies for the late reply. Been very busy! Well as far as i can see the problem is solved. Ive had a play about and cant seem to find any faults! So thank you very much for helping me out with this one. I dont think it would have been possible for me to have done this completely on my own!

If anything ever crops up il get in touch!

    Thanks again!

Re: Match fishing results and league tables

    Hi.

It's a forum rule that you start your own thread, rather than try to "hijack" someone else's thread. This helps prevent massive confusion arising -which will happen if it is not clear which question is being answered. So please start your own thread and explain your own problem (make sure that, right from the start, you use a meaningful title (NOT things like "help needed" or "urgent problem"... think of the Google search terms that you would use to find the solution). Also, preferably attach an Excel sheet. Make sure there is enough data to demonstrate your need. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary. Remember to remove ALL confidential information first!!!

Just before you submit your post, click on GO ADVANCED (near the bottom) and EITHER click "Manage Attachments" OR use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.

Re: Match fishing results and league tables

    Revised instructions for samples...

Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? However, please give us an indication of the approximate number of rows of data you want the solution to work with (100, 1000, 100,000 or whatever). Please don't attach a picture of an Excel sheet (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. It does NOT have to be your real sheet - mock up a SAMPLE if you need to. But not 1000's of rows!!! It makes manual checking so tedious. Whatever you do... make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    2. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    3. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Re: Match fishing results and league tables

    Morning All,
I am also a keen Match Angler and belong to a small local club.
I found this site when I googled, to try to solve an issue to the league table, that I have been creating.
When I Saw this site, I decided to join this forum, in the hope of sharing what I have learned so far and also hoping that You can help me, with my last dilemma with my competition/league tables?
Our club is very similar, in running Spring/Winter Leagues at various away-day venues. Plus We have two stretches of rivers, from which we run a bunch of cup matches through the Summer and another River Winter League, through the Autumn/Winter.
My main reason for creating this workbook is because all of the Club match Points/Weight go towards our Main Cup (The Club Cup)
So my aim was to have a program, which collates all the points and weights together and has running Tables, which update from each match that is run.
Blimey, sounds complicated just typing it up.. lol
I think I have cracked everything now, except allowing for those Anglers who have equal points, to sort via total weight countback??
That is causing me a bit of a headache..
However, you will note that the program deals with lbs/ozs really well, which I'm quite proud of!
This might help the Gentleman who started the thread.
Hope maybe you can help on this one?
    Cheers

    Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, you are not allowed to piggy-back or hijack another member's thread, so please start your own thread on this issue. Thanks!

PS And when you do start your new thread, don't forget to attach the workbook.
