    Workbook Protection???

    Hi Everyone,

I am trying to lock opening an Excel file by requesting a password, (So as the file cannot be opened without a password). Which originally I thought would be an easy enough task. However when I try to look up online, it tells me to click On the Review tab, under Protection, click Passwords. etc. etc.

However, I only have the option to Protect sheet or Workbook under the 'Changes section' of the Review tab. I can't seem to locate the 'Protection' section on the review tab even when customising the ribbon.

Any ideas? I am using Excel 2013

    Thank you in advance.

Do this in the VB editor -

    ALT+F11 to get into VBEditor
In the project window click on "ThisWorkbook"
In the Properties window you will see a field titled Password with ****** next to it. Overwrite the ****** with what you want - when you click out of it, it will display as ****** again.

WARNING - You cannot forget your password - there is no recovery - so KNOW what you are saving it as!

    Thank you for that.

This particular spreadsheet, links to another and has a validation drop-down box. However, since adding the password, whenever I now do open it, the drop down does not work?

To protect your file with password click File (Just Beside Home) --> Protect Workbook --> Now Select Encrypt With Password --> type your password --> ok --> retype your password --> ok. Now save the file. That's it. You will be asked for a password now whenever you open this.

That's not true. I believe that any security can be broken if you know the way or you can discover the way.

@watson150: You want to protect the workbook and ask for password when user double click the excel worksheet?
    If yes, then try this:
File menu => Save As (Leave the file name as is to overwrite or change to the name you want).
Next to Save button, hit Tool => General Options.
Type passwords, click ok, then click Save.

I agree completely - but there is not a "Recover Password" Button - Getting in without a password is "Malicious" and not really a proper discussion for the forum -
But, I do agree - security is just a stop in a program and all stops can be skipped -

    Cheers

That is odd - Unless you changed the sheets or source file location for the validation lists I don't think the password should impact that... I have not seen this behavior... does it work again if you turn off the password?
