Help Creating a Colour-Coded Monitoring Sheet

I'm wanting to create a sheet to monitor the progress of children's handwriting in my class and I want to be able to sort it so that I can choose a certain letter and the sheet sorts itself showing the children who can't form it correctly at the top and those who can at the bottom. The picture shows how I've created it so far. Off screen to the left is a list of all the children's names and their progress is in rows. So, if I clicked on the 'b' column, I'd want it to sort it so all those with red appeared at the top and green at the bottom, with the names sorting themselves in alphabetical order at the side (A-Z for red boxes and then A-Z for green). I hope this makes sense, can anyone help?

    Thanks

    Hi,
select all your chart, including the names. In the Data tab, click Sort. Choose the column you want to sort by, change the 'Sort on' box to Cell Color and choose the order of the color you want to sort.

This can be automated by a macro if you give me the range of cells your chart occupies.
    Frob first, tweak later

    Hi,

When I do this, I only get the option to sort the green cells, an option for the red cells doesn't show.

    Thanks

How are they formatted? Is it by conditional formatting? Perhaps you could remove the children's names and upload a copy.

I've replicated your problem using conditional formatting. In which case you need to include the {hidden?} columns in your selection and sort by the values in them.

I haven't done any conditional formatting, I made the whole thing manually and haven't touched any settings.

It worked for me. Did you try and sort on a column that had both colours present?

Re: Help Creating a Colour-Coded Monitoring Sheet

Working for me now as well! Any idea how I can get it so that it sorts the names as well? Also how I can have a button so I can do it automatically without having to manually sort it every time?

    Thanks

Re: Help Creating a Colour-Coded Monitoring Sheet

Hi, thanks for your help. However, I can't now add the names back in because the data is not in the same order as it was before. When I sort alphabetically it thinks that Abby 3 comes after Abby 29 so I can't put it back in its original order. Is there a way to do this?

    Thanks

Sorry, I think it was already sorted by a colour before I added the names . I'll download the first one you posted again and upload it back in the right order.

Re: Help Creating a Colour-Coded Monitoring Sheet

    Hi thanks so much!

Is there any way that it can be sorted by green or red but then by alphabetical order as well. So red A-Z and then green A-Z?

    Thanks
