"B3" has a COUNTA function in it and I want to have a it change colors when it is >=5. Easy enough, except it always stays green because of the function in it.

Use COUNTIF instead

The Conditional Format is based on the VALUE of the cell or the RESULT of the function.
Select B3

Use a formula to determine...
=(B3>=5)
Format as required
Use Format painter (paintbrush icon) to copy to other cells

Ensure you describe your problem clearly, I have little time available to solve these problems and do not appreciate numerous changes to them.
Jesus Special-K, you have no idea how long that has annoyed me. I believe I even posted on here months back and never got a sufficient answer like this! I basically just had other conditional formatting that superseded it keep the color the way it should be.
Thank you!
TMS- thank you, but COUNTA works because I am just counting the non-empty cells next to it.
