Problem: Grey field appears on top of the window and below form when enabling Formula bar

    Hello,
I started to have an issue - the Grey field started appearing when opening excel documents and enabling formula bar (can not be minimized).
When formula bar disabled - grey screen disappears. More window opened - bigger grey area. Already tried to reinstall Microsoft Office - did not helped. Here are a screen shots in the the attached file.

    Thanks.

Top right of your screen. You see the ? in a blue field. Click the 2nd icon to the right of it (maximise window).

Thanks Glenn. It is not helping, it goes to full screen (first attachment) if pressed in full screen mode it goes to smaller window (last attachement) and so on..

    can you attach your sheet???

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

When I click on the maximise icon (middle one, just above column N) it fills the whole screen perfectly.

You must have been detected thinking bad thoughts about the Microsoft Corporation... So. I can't reproduce your problem. My suggestion works fine on my PC, but not on yours...

    1. Try minimising it and then maximising it.
    2. Turn it all off and then on again.
    3. Throw the whole lot out the window and stick with your Mac....

I think I found a work around....as long as you do not have the Preview Pane selected in the File Explorer, the grey field will not appear in Excel spreadsheets.

Funny you should mention that. I did notice yesterday when I had clicked on an excel and previewed it my computer snapped over to Excel and the grey bar was there!!

However I believe I also have had it jump up while I've been away from the computer.

Did yours also grow the grey field in size when you used a drop down from the ribbon (i.e. font)?

Yes, the grey field continued to grow. As long as you keep your File Explorer on Details Pane when you have an Excel spreadsheet open, you should be ok. If you forget and the grey field appears, you have to switch to details pane, close the Excel file, and close out all windows folders. It's a pain, but that is what I have found that worked.

Finally it took over the whole screen. Disabling preview pane makes Excel usable again. Excel 2007.

I've the same problem, but I found a workaround. If I don't maximize Excel window it won't happen. I keep it almost full screen but don't use the maximize button.

I found a very easy work around. Open your document and do a "save as" to Excel 2007, that removes a lot of enhancements that the new Excel has which might be glitching and causing the grey space. Of course once you down save, you can up save it again to get back to where you were without the grey space. I hope this helps.

Re: Problem: Grey field appears on top of and bottom of the form

I am having the same problem on a Mac. It is only happening on one of two worksheets in the workbook.
In my case there is a very small set of buttons 1, 2 and 3 in the left of the field above the row headers, which disappears if you turn row headers off. This might suggest something to do with grouping?
    • I tried messing around with the group/ungroup buttons (the ones referenced but not named above). That didn't help.
    • Turning view ribbon or view formula bar on and off does not remove it.
    • I saved it as an .xls (1997-2004) file, but that did not fix it either.
    • I don't think there is an OS X equivalent to the Windows preview pane. Anyway, the fact that it is only happening on one worksheet suggests something within the worksheet.

    Any more ideas?
