Move to the row below if you reach a new column without pressing enter

    Hi,

I use excel for note taking too.
    I have a column A for notes.

When I enter text and reach the end of row of column A ,then I have to press enter to get to the row below.
Is it possible to move automatically to the row bellow ,just like when you working with a text editor and you hit an edge of the page without hitting enter?

I like to have one line of text only in one row.

    Thank you.

What would be your limitation as a cell can be 255 characters wide but it can contain 32,767 characters.

Excel is a spreadsheet and therefore not designed for use as you want it to operate. It only knows that a cell has complete data when you select either the Enter key or the Tab key. Perhaps your note taking may be more workable with word processing software?

Can excel recognize the next column border, when data is being entered in a cell and it starts to spill into neighboring column?

Simple answer is No. It is still filling in the current cell. Cell widths are arbitrary to the contents and are set for display purposes only.

Sounds like what you are asking about is "Word Wrap", which can be found in the FORMAT menu selection.

Select one cell, or one column or row or a number of both (highlight them), then choose the FORMAT function / Alignment / Word Wrap.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Lou

Can excel recognize the next column border, when data is being entered in a cell and it starts to spill into neighboring column?
This is essentially what "Wrap Text" does...is that a viable option?

Wrap text looks fine until I press ENTER.Then the row is expended .I'm trying to avoid the row expansion and have one line per row.

Re: Move to the row below if you reach a new column without pressing enter

I Found a solution for people who need to enter text into excel in a similar way as it is in word.

    1.Insert shapes (rectangle for example)
    2.draw a rectangle
    3.choose the fill option
4.choose the font size your shape (if you want to have text in rows nicely lined up ,use the same font you have set as default for your sheet
5.Right click on the shape and choose option
I chose-FILL-no fill (to show lines)
TEXT BOX- autofit--resize shape to fit text
    - Wrap text in shape is checked

You can enter text with :bullets,,indent them to create levels, etc (right click on a shape, then add bullets)
