return day of week or leave blank

    Hello Chaps--
query very similar to post by coomsie-

I have a date in columnA and I want to return the day of week in columnB

    A!= 18/11/2016
    then b1 must be Friday
    but
    If a1 is blank then
    b1 must also be blank

But if columnA is empty then I want to leave columnB empty as well

    please suggest a formula

    regards
    fred

    sorry--
I found that this one works

    =IF(A1="";"";TEXT(A1;"dddd"))

But why doesnt yours work -
have I got something wrong in the formatting of the cell?
    regards

Think I may have left out a bracket??

Looks like your Regional Settings use a semi-colon ( as the separator as opposed to UK where it is a comma (,). My fault; I was thinking you wanted the week day number. Dohhhh.

    Glad you got into work.
