    Disable folder rename

    Hey there World

A pretty simple solution I'm sure, but it escapes me. How can I ensure that a user does not delete or rename a folder.
The web searches render solutions which I can't understand. Which boxes of the below image must be ticked, not ticked etc.

Moderator's note: This is not an Excel question, not even a Microsoft Office question. I have moved it from Excel General to our Windows forum. --6StringJazzer

    Re: Disable folder rename

It's a little more involved than just one dialogue box. The instructions vary a bit depending on your version of Windows and how the network is configured, but it's something similar to the instructions below.

    1. Right-click the folder you want to prevent being renamed and select 'Properties'. Click the 'Security' tab. Click the 'Advanced' button (near the bottom normally). You should see a list of user types - something like 'Administrators', 'SYSTEM', 'Users', 'Power Users', etc, etc.
    2. Click the 'Change Permissions' button. You'll get another window which looks similar to the last, but with different buttons - normally at the bottom - 'Add', 'Edit', 'Remove' - and two tick-boxes labelled 'Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent' and 'Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object'.
    3. De-select the 'Include inheritable permissions' box. You'll get a warning box with some explanation and 'Add' 'Remove' and 'Cancel' buttons. Click 'Remove'. All the permissions for this folder will be removed.
    4a. Now click 'Add'.
4b. In the box at the bottom of the new dialogue window which pops up, type 'Users' then click 'Check Names', then 'OK'. A new dialogue box will pop up similar to the picture you posted, but for 'Users' not 'SYSTEM'.
4c. Make sure 'Apply to - This folder, subfolders and files' is selected in the drop-down box. Then tick (select): 'Traverse folder / execute file', 'List folder / read data', 'Read attributes', 'Read extended attributes' and 'Read permissions'. Click OK.
    5. Now repeat steps 4a-4b above, but this time at 4c select 'Apply to - Subfolders and files only', then tick 'Write attributes' and 'Delete'. Click OK.
    6. Now repeat steps 4a-4b again, but this time at 4c select 'Apply to - Subfolders only', then tick 'Create files / write data' and 'Create folders / append data' (you can miss out this second one if you don't want any sub-folders being created here). Click OK.
    7. Now repeat 4a but at 4b enter 'SYSTEM' instead of 'Users' . At 4c With 'This folder, subfolders and files' selected, click 'Full Control'. Repeat this for 'Administrators'. (I'm not 100% sure that this step is needed, but it's best to be sure.)

That should do what you want.

Disclaimer. Without knowing your exact system setup, I can't guarantee that this is exactly what you want. Please test the above steps (on a folder created for testing purposes) before applying them to a working folder.

I recently started a new job so am a bit busy and may not reply quickly. Sorry - it's not personal - I will reply eventually.
If your problem is solved, please go to 'Thread Tools' above your first post and 'Mark this Thread as Solved'.
If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
You don't need to give me rep if I helped, but a thank-you is nice.
