I want to calculate the number of hours/minutes between 2 times. I have formatted the cells to hh:mm but when I try to put the actual time into the cell it shows 00:00 and on the function line shows a date and 00:00. Can anyone advise on where I am going wrong.

Are you entering the time correctly, with a colon (12:00)? If not, e.g. you're entering it with a full stop (12.00), Excel will interpret that as a date.
(Also, if you're looking for differences which might be more than 24hrs, use [h]:mm instead, otherwise Excel will only count time up to 23:59:59.)

If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
