Angry custom style while entering data

I want to assign color blue to 3 random cells on the sheet that I type value into. Then I want to assign color yellow to the next 5 random cells that I type value into. so on and so forth.

I don't want to select range of cells to do this on. I simply want the cell fill color that I assign to "stick" on entered data until I change it again while entering my next set of data. I am pulling out my hair trying to figure this simply thing in Excel.

Help is soooo much appreciated.

Use conditional formatting. If you attach your workbook its more helpful.

Actually, it is not a "simple" thing. In order to make cells "change color", you would need to specify what range of cells you would be working with, and "3 random cells" and "next 5 random cells" hardly does that.

What will you be entering - numbers? text? something else?
What defines which cells change to blue, and which to yellow - just the sequence that you enter data? If that is the case, no regular formula or Conditional Formatting will do that for you, you will need VBA
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Re: custom style while entering data

Hi there,

Its a combination of number and text. There is no specific pattern.

The sheet is for a patient and Dr. appointment scheduling system for a 3 shared rooms in a office space between 4 Doctors. As patients call in for a doctor the receptionist simply needs to reserve 2 of the rooms so color coding is to identify which doctor.

So it is dynamically assigned.

If I had 4 buttons on top that receptionist could click on to denote which Doctor she is filling out the next set of cells for, it would solve the problem.

I am stumped.

See attached file. You can select one of four colors and then wherever you type, those cells will be filled with the selected color.

You can modify the macro to suit.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the update - that makes much more sense now.

You could probably also do this wit dropdowns and Conditional Formatting. if the code above is not what you want, shout again, and I will see about putting something together using my suggestion

Thank you so much!!! this is what I wanted. I just need to play around with the macro code and get my delete button to clear out the fill color.
