The document Filename caused a serious error

I am trying to open an .xlsx extension file but I'm getting the error message "The document Filename caused a serious error the last time it was opened." I have tried renaming without the x, and also opening in a different version of Excel, but the programme will not let me.
My Laptop runs Windows 8 with 8GB RAM, virtual memory 8GB, Excel 2013 32 bit.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Re: The document Filename caused a serious error

This error message indicates that Excel crashed that last time that file was active. Renaming the file without the x just makes Excel tell you that the file format does not match the file type.

When you get this error, Excel should offer you the choice of opening the file anyway. What buttons appear on the dialog box that gives you this message?

If you open the file anyway, Excel may tell you that it had to make repairs to be able to open the file. This indicates that there could have been a corruption in the file. Usually Excel is able to save these files, but sometimes you will lose information.

If the file is not private feel free to attach it here for us to diagnose.

bishop77, if you wish, you may search for commercial tools that rescue corrupted files. We do not advertise or recommend specific commercial solutions.
