    Index match issue

Hopefully the image attachment will be readable. Anyway, the first formula works fine (returning a value of 1), but the second one returns #REF!. I've checked the values (I even copied "Alabama" and "2001" from one column to the other). Can any fresh eyes see the problem?

Attaching a sample workbook enables others to work on your problem:

To attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to make it clear what is needed. Include BEFORE/AFTER sheets if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and click "manage attachments" to open the upload window.

And while you're doing htat... can you explain what you want the formula to do?

    Re: Index match issue

Simply return a value of 1 if the year/team combination exists in the columns on the left.

    Re: Index match issue

I found a workaround. I added a 3rd column to the left of the beige column and filled it with all 1's, and then returned that column in the formula. I thought you could use literal constants anywhere you can use a cell reference, but not here I guess. I should also mention that I'm using Excel 2000.
