    File Size

    Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what's going on with this files size. I have, to me no real data in it, but for some reason it's about 1 MB. I'm going to refill it with the code, and some table data, but I'm really at a loss as to why it's already at 1 MB

    Re: File Size

It's just the number of rows you have on the 'Questions' sheet. (If you remove that sheet, the file size drops to 33kB; if you remove all the other sheets, leaving that one, the size is 998kB.) Try saving the file as .xlsb (Excel binary workbook); that'll reduce the file size down to about 470kB at the cost of slightly slower loading and saving. Keep formatting to a minimum, as every different format used increases the size of the file.

Sorry I can't be of more help...

I recently started a new job so am a bit busy and may not reply quickly. Sorry - it's not personal - I will reply eventually.
If your problem is solved, please go to 'Thread Tools' above your first post and 'Mark this Thread as Solved'.
If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
You don't need to give me rep if I helped, but a thank-you is nice.

    Re: File Size

Its due to number of rows in "Questions" sheet.
Also no any blank row or column, its also affect on file size.
Secondly i have notice that, the formula enter in row 7 only, other as a text. If you enter formula then file size increase.

    Re: File Size

Sorry if this is a dumb question, so it seems it's better to use addl. columns than addl rows? I thought this was the opposite historically? Before I was using about 350 columns on 2 - 3 sheets and the file was 2.25 MB. now with 1 sheet and 8K rows it's about 6 MB

    Re: File Size

Glad to be of help and thanks for the rep.

Regarding your follow-up question, I wasn't sure so thought I'd do a quick test:
    • 10,000 rows and 26 columns of just numbers (no formulae at all) saved as .xlsx is 1.10 MB (1,158,457 bytes).
    • Transposed, so 10,000 columns and 26 rows (still no formulae) saved as .xlsx is 1.32 MB (1,385,746 bytes) - an increase in size of 20%.
    • Saved as .xlsb is the sizes were 700 KB (717,441 bytes) and 908 KB (929,796 bytes).

So it's clearly better to use more rows rather than more columns. (Of course, most row/column ratios won't be as extreme!)

    Hope that helps.

    Re: File Size

Thanks, this did help. Dissatisfying and still confusing, because I expect this logic to hold. but for some reason using 4 tabs with rows at about 28 or so and columns of about 300 or so results in about 1 - 2 MB smaller file than one that replaces this info. with one tab, less than 20 columns and 8000 or so rows. As long as I know my logic isn't wrong, this is good to know and I won't remake the file.
