Re: Any way to repair severely corrupted excel file

The original file is most likely not recoverable.

When you (permanently) delete a file, the disk area(s) used by the file are marked as 'free' and can be used by the operating system to store other information. If any area previously occupied by the file has been overwritten then there's no chance of recovering the original data. If it is possible to recover a file it is essential this is done as soon as possible. The longer the file is 'deleted' the greater chance some of the contents will be overwritten so the one overriding thing is the sooner you try to recover a file the better.

That's a general overview - forensic techniques can recover data after a disk has been formatted but that's a little out of this league. However, there is a chance a copy of the file might still be in the Temporary directory - have a read of this, if you haven't already.

Re: Any way to repair severely corrupted excel file

    Hi, elaph

The Excel xls/xlsx file is actually a zip archive containing one main workbook.xml file and several supplemental files. You can find more detailed information about the Excel xls/xlsx file format by searching on Google with the keyword “Excel xls/xlsx file format”. If the archive file is corrupt, or the main items in the archive are damaged or corrupted, then you will not be able to open the file correctly with Excel. In such a case, the first step is to try to use the built-in repair or recovery function in the Excel, to see if it can repair or recover the corrupt file. If not, then you need to resort to a third-party Excel recovery Excel fix software to scan the corrupted file and recover Excel data for you. It is also possible to find a data recovery expert or company to do the task, but in most of the cases, they will also use a third-party tool to do the recovery for you.

The main difference between using the software by yourself and by a third-party service company is:
    (1) The company is familiar with the data recovery industry so he knows which software is the best one. While you need to search and compare the software online by yourself, which is time-consuming.
    (2) The company purchases the software for multiple usages, while you purchase the software for one-time usage only. So normally the service fee may be cheaper than the license fee for the software.
    (3) DIY will keep your data confidential while do the recovery via a company may cause data breach.

If you want to perform a DIY recovery, then you can try the following methods:

If you want to perform a DIY recovery, then you can try the following methods:

    1. First of all, you can try to repair the file manually in Excel, as follows:

    (1) On the File menu, click Open.
    (2) In the Open dialog box, select the file you want to open, and click the arrow next to the Open button.
    (3) Click Open and Repair, and then choose which method you want to use to recover your workbook.

You may find more information about this at:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...001034656.aspx (for Excel 2003)
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...017.aspx?CTT=1 (for Excel 2007)
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...840.aspx?CTT=1 (for Excel 2010)
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...554.aspx?CTT=1 (for Excel 2013)

    2. If method 1 fails, there are still several methods to recover your Excel file manually with Excel, including writing a small VBA macro, as below

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...#_Toc337637262

    3. If all above methods do not work, then you can try DataNumen Excel Repair at:

    https://www.datanumen.com/excel-repair/

I have used the tool in the past and it helps recovering some valuable data for me. The tool has a free demo so that you can try to see if it works on your file or not before you buy.

Hope this will help. Good Luck!

Re: Any way to repair severely corrupted excel file

It happens with almost everyone. By mistake, our important Excel file got deleted and we forgot to take backup. So, here is the method to recover deleted Excel file. In order to recover them use these 2 methods.

Method 1: Use MS Office Repair Option

It’s an inbuilt MS office Repair option. Follow these simple steps to recover the spreadsheets.

    1. Open Excel and click on File>> Open.
    2. Go to the folder where the damaged file is located and select it.
    3. Select the arrow beside Open button and choose Open and Repair.
    4. Choose Repair for the maximum data recovery.
    5. If it fails, choose Extract Data option. Excel data should get retrieved.

Method 2: Recover Data from Temp Files

If you have the auto-recovery option enabled, you can get back the data from the temp files. By enabling this option it’s easy to recover damaged Excel file.

    1. Go to the temp file location on your system:
    On Windows 8/10:
    C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles
    On Windows 7:
    C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\
    2. Find out the temporary Excel file that ends with ‘.tmp’ and start with ‘$' or ‘~’.
    3. Copy and paste the file to another folder and change the extension to XLSX.

I hope you find these solution reliable an deffective. I think you will your recover Excel files with the help of given methods.

    Thankyou
    Katherine Pearson

Re: Any way to repair severely corrupted excel file

I read in many forums that the recovered file got corrupted. To handle excel file corruption, try Open and Repair option.

    1. Open MS Excel
    2. Select the file which you want to repair
    3. Select Open and Repair option
    4. Click Repair

This is the basic repair option provided by Microsoft. If Repair option is not working then, there is another option called extract. You can extract the content if file is severely corrupted.

If you already tried it, then open Excel in Safe mode. If the file is opening without issue then, you can try to delete Com Add-ins. How to delete Com Add-in (Please Google it)

I will also suggest you read this: https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/repair-a-corrupted-workbook-153a45f4-6cab-44b1-93ca-801ddcd4ea53

If you want to go with third-party tools then, I will suggest stellar Excel Repair software (as per my experience).

Re: Any way to repair severely corrupted excel file

There are possible causes of Excel file corruption:
    • If you’re using an unsupported Excel file format or
    • The file may corrupt due to sudden power off.
    • when opening an older version of the excel file in a new version on MS Office

Also, here are the solutions you can use to solve the error:

Solution 1: Change the default file format.

Try changing the Excel default file format by following these steps:
    1. In Excel 2010 and newer versions, click on the File menu.
    2. In the Info screen that appears, click on Options.
    3. In the ‘Excel Options’ window, under the Save workbooks section, click on the Save files in this file format: drop-down. Select a file format (i.e., the one supported by your Excel version).
    4. Click OK.

Check if you can open your Excel file. If not, try the next solution.

Solution 2: Edit the excel file permissions

Follow these steps to change the file permissions and see if it fixes the problem:
    1. Right-click on the file that won’t open and click Properties.
    2. In the file properties dialog box, click the Security tab and then hit the Edit button.
    3. When the file’s permissions dialog box appears, click on the Add button.
    4. Click on the Advanced button from the ‘Select Users or Groups’ window.
    5. Select Find Now. A list of all users and groups will get displayed in a search results box. Choose Everyone group from the list and hit OK.
    6. You can see the ‘Everyone’ group in the ‘Enter the object names to select’ textbox. Click OK once again to return to the file’s permission dialog box.
    7. Click Everyone from the Group or user names: box and check all the checkboxes under Allow.
    8. Click on Apply and then OK.

    I hope this will help.

    Best Regards,

    Cheryl
