    "Excel cannot access the file..."

    Hello All,

I've got a workbook that is killing me. I've got this error message that pops up every time I open my workbook. In addition, it seems like every 10 min or so, the sheet locks up and is "Not Responding".

I've did a CTRL -F and searched for the file in the workbook and could not find it.

    please help!!!

Do you have any links to another workbook or worksheet that is no longer there?

This could be in a formula or in a chart or other object that has been pasted into your workbook from another source!

Otherwise, there is no other reason I can think of. We would need to see the workbook.

    Regards,

    David

I've did a CTRL-F and searched the entire workbook for the file and cannot find it. The file/link is to some file on our company sharepoint. For some reason, this is a reoccuring issue within our company.

. . so is the only way for you to diagnose is by me sharing the workbook?

In "D" column you have formula
    Formula: copy to clipboard
Please Login or Register to view this content.

Neet to change path ["D1:D1624] (which is highlighted in red) : To enter your Book1.xlsx respective folder path.
    Same applicable for "E" column.
    Give feedback.

That is the path to the file. That path is NOT the one that pops up when you open up the file though.

Side note, can you please remove the username in the prior post? Personal reasons.

Re: "Excel cannot access the file..."

    I'm not following I'm afraid!

AVK is correct in saying that the issue is in the path included in the formula in col D.

This needs to be changed. Has the file been copied from another computer? In that case, the VLOOKUP won't work because the lookup file may not be on your computer.

Ctrl+F (Find and Replace) is not the best way to change this. It is best to go to the Data Ribbon, and click on Edit Links - then click Change Source and choose the file to get the data from.

I hope this helps, please let me know!

    Regards,

    David

The file that its linking to when you open the file is a file that I have never seen before. How can I attach the file if I have no clue where it is?

How about this. When you open the file, does it immediately give you an error stating "We can't connect to . . . . . . . . . Please make sure you're using the correct web address"?

    See my latest attachment.

Do you now understand that the issue is NOT Book1.xlsx and it's this "Master 2014...." file that is causing the problems?

Re: "Excel cannot access the file..."

No I don't understand the problem!

As I see it, the formula in D2 and following is looking at col A for a match to the value in C2, and returning the value in Col C.

That list is in Sheet1 in Book1 which is on your C drive at C:\Users\*******\Documents\

I have no idea where the Master 2014... is coming from, but if you follow what I said in post #8 and Edit the source file, it should work.

By the way, I think auto-calc might be set to manual. Say to Auto or hit F9.

I hope this helps, please let me know!

    Regards,

    David

See attached. The reason the vlookups weren't working is because there wasn't any data for it to match or retrieve. So now it's matching and retrieving data.

That never was my problem however, again, master 2014 is my issue.

Now do you understand the probleM?

Re: "Excel cannot access the file..."

The problem is a 'Name' in your 16d file. Go to the 'Formulas' tab, click 'Name Manager' and scroll down to the entry named 'special'. It refers to '--filepath--/[Master 20140122.xlsx]Sheet1'!$A:$A'. Delete this, or amend it to a reference you have/want, and the error should be gone.
    Regards,
    Aardigspook

I recently started a new job so am a bit busy and may not reply quickly. Sorry - it's not personal - I will reply eventually.
If your problem is solved, please go to 'Thread Tools' above your first post and 'Mark this Thread as Solved'.
If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
You don't need to give me rep if I helped, but a thank-you is nice.

Re: "Excel cannot access the file..."

I deleted all the formulas in Col D, and saved with a new name. When I opened it, the problem went away.

Suggest you try thee same, and enter a new formula.

    @morerockin
Thanks for the rep - I assume that means that the problem's fixed?

If that's the case, please take a moment to mark the thread as 'Solved' so others know that's the case (instructions in my sig). Thanks.

Obviously, if there's still a problem, let us know
