Excel 2016 64 bit 'links' to un-referenced *.xlsx when workbook is opened

I'm an advanced Excel user. Recently I updated from 2013 64 bit to 2016 64 bit. Now, when I open a workbook used with 2013 that does not and never did contain links to other workbooks a message appears at the bottom: "Linking to filename.xlsx". There are no macros, links or data sources in the workbook (and a workbook search for filename shows not found) and I never saw this with v2013. No modules or VBA code present reverencing that workbook either. Yes, I tried opening the workbook using the 'repair' function. My OS is Windows 8.1 and up to date.
Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix it?

Did you also check conditional formatting and named ranges for external references?

Yep, checked named ranged and CFormats. Solved it myself.
    1) Make a dummy file with filename
    2) Link the dummy file to the workbook, save
    3) Break the link, save
Was taking Excel a huge amount of RAM and time to open and save mere 100 - 200 MB files. 1 2 3 fixed it. Others use these data reduction workbooks on Dropbox so...

Scottiex, I misspoke and thank you for the tip! Have calibration data from 64 ozone sensors in a LabVIEW generated csv file 400 columns wide x 60,001 rows... Use an offset array to parse in groups of 8 multiplexed sensors on each COM port to make the data reduction file and calibration/residual graphs <~140MB. Just need to F9 recalc 8 times (for 8 COM ports) and save each coefficient array as values to later program the EPROMS... When I set this up 3 years ago I thought it clever to use a name but later changed the name to an ab$olute (this) workbook reference. Did NOT delete the name after changing formulas to ab$olute THIS workbook reference. 1 2 3 fixed it because I'd already removed the name from the cell formulas but when I took old data reduction files off Dropbox (archived on company network RAID drive) the old name reference file went by-by. This teaches that care must be used when naming ranges in Excel--if you have a workbook file referenced in the name range things can get messed up. Was taking about 15 minutes to close the workbooks before the fix.
    Thank you again Scottiex!

If you want something done right... find a forum and ask an online expert.

Yes, Excel is fun and useful. MathCAD is pretty cool too. With MathCAD one can write concise wysiwyg vectorized formulas with data imported from Excel then export results back to Excel. Most graphics are better in Excel though MathCAD has more facile 3D. One nice thing about Excel is that other programs, such as LabVIEW, that have .NET integration can write *.xlsx files using Excel Interop dll libraries. That way LabVIEW does all the heavy calculations (in arrays) and spits out a *xlsx compressed file with results to a bar code printer. Mfg. staff then do not need to know how to use Excel, they just apply the labels.
