Slicers with table and chart

I have detail sales data with a bunch of different fields and slicers for the year field. I would like to show a monthly sales chart based on the detail data and have it change when a slicer is selected. In order to total the data by month I need to create a pivot table but that does not change when I use a slicer on the detail data. If I try and chart the detail data directly then it does not total per month. any ideas?

Let me ask the question another way, I have detail data in a table with a slicer for year. I created a pivot table from that
data and created a slicer for the pivot table. What I want is to select the slicer for the detail data and update the pivot
table which updates the chart. Basically is there a way to connect the two slicers or better yet have the slicer that controls
the detail data also change the pivot table in real time.
