    Can not update linked Picture

I have a range in a workbook I want to link to another workbook via a linked picture. The linked picture only updates when the source workbook is open. Id like to have the linked picture update without the source file needing to be open. When I open the file with the linked picture in it, it asked to update the connections. That ends up not doing anything to the picture.

You could use VBA to open the other file, update the link and immediately close it again.

Could you save the image to a folder and link directly to the image instead of linking to a workbook?

Re: Can not update linked Picture

I believe the result that I need should work out of the box with Excel. I think I may have some connection settings turned off but I dont know what those are. When I click on the picture and go to "Edit links" it shows a warning that the source file needs to be opened to update the data. The functionality I want I had working last week then ended up breaking it somehow. I shouldnt need any VBA to get this working.

If you could test this yourself its easy to see if it works for you. Just create 2 new files. Open both, in your source file copy any cell. Go to your file you want to link the cell, go to paste picture as link, save the file and close it. Go to your source file, change that cell and save it, close that file. Now open your file you pasted the link, it should ask you if you want to update the data. At that point it should work or not work.

Re: Can not update linked Picture

This could be an unfortunate gremlin that has crept into Excel2016 - I tried various things to get it to work without opening the file and, like you, I got nowhere
In desperation I opened the file containing the link using Excel 2010 and the picture auto-updated when the file opened - which tells us how Excel should behave!

I am not hopeful of progressing this further, but will give it some time tomorrow - I have already checked settings in 2010 vs 2016.

Re: Can not update linked Picture

When I got it to work the first time it functioned really weird. When opening the file with the links it was asking me to update the data twice then saying that the source workbook was already open (which it wasnt). When I closed the workbook with the links it was asking me to save the source workbook even though it wasnt actually open and thats not what was being closed. That scared me a bit. One time I actually said to save the source workbook even though it wasnt actually open, when I opened the actual source workbook it was completely blank and I needed to restore a backup. So the first time I got it to work seemed broken in some sense.
