I would like to group rows by family name but error says "To do this all merged cells need to be the same size."
Note on my sheet Column A represents the Family Name. Rows 5 and 6 are for different people within the same family group. I would like to group it as listed on the sheet. If I were to click Family Name sort Z to A it doesn't work. Is this possible? Thank you.
It's never a good idea to use merged cells. Most of us avoid then like the plague since they cause too many problems for all sorts of reasons which needn't concern us just at the moment.
If this data has come from a back office system the simplest solution is to ensure you don't have merged cells. That said if you're stuck with the data as is, one way would be to insert a new column A and enter in A3 and copy it down

Then copy column A and paste back as values and delete column B
