    Sorting a list containing links

I have a list of data where some cells contains links to other cells within the list. When I sort the list the data within the list is moved around but the row numbers keeps their numbers. This means that data that was in cell B5 suddenly might be in B10. Usually Excel updates the links accordingly, (i.e. the cell that linked to B5 before would now have linked to B10) but today I noticed that the links did not update while sorting. Does anybody knows if this is a new behaviour, or have I just not noticed this particular behaviour when sorting before?

    Good morning Bergman

    ...and welcome to the forum!

It sounds like you're experiencing what has long been a bug (feature?) in Excel.
What you're explaining usually happens when a cell is linked to another cell and references its own sheet.

For example, you are using a sheet called "Sheet1" :
cell A1 says "=C1" This example will sort without a problem
cell A1 says "=Sheet1!C1" This will sort with the issue you are reporting

Re: Sorting a list containing links

    Thank you =)

Actually I think the current problem is more due to the fact that sorting the list means that the data moves but the row stays. I.e. when I press sort the data contained in row 2 suddenly might land in row 5. All the links still reference to row 2, but the data in those cells are now something different.

At first I thought this was a new problem, but I dug out my old laptop that hasn't been updated in several years and tried the same thing there. Lo and behold, same problem there too! I guess I just haven't noted it before since the kind of lists that I sort usually don't contain any links/cell references.
