compatibility issue 2003 to 2007

Hi Everyone,
This is a question on behalf of my hubby. He has lots of excel files created in Excel 2003 using XP as the operating system.
The hard drive has crashed, however most of the files (which is an extensive collection) are backed up. He had already encountered the problem of "no disk space format"- meaning any additional formatting is not possible. Here is the dilemma- he would like to upgrade to excel 2007 (or even 2010) - however, these 2003 files when opened in my excel 2007 (on windows 7) change the formats in some of the cells.

Can we make the excel 2003 files open in a later version of excel and have formatting still appear as the original files?

The other dilemma for which there is no fix is that his beloved Canon LBP1120 printer is not compatible with Windows 7. (there are no drivers available) I had this same problem when my hard drive crashed a while ago, then decided to upgrade my OS and had to buy a new printer.

Thank you
Carol

Hi rats,

Sorry to hear about the hard drive.

The older .xls format of Excel files was the standard in 2003 as you know. If you open then in 2007 and then same them as .xlsx they might be a lot smaller. Does that help with your full hard drive problem? I don't think the format of the cells should be changed in this saving as .xlsx. If you can find one that is changed, could you tell us what or where it happened. Microsoft has been very careful on making things backward compatible.
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

Hi MarvinP,
Thanks for your answer. When opening files in 2007, there are the formatting changes, but then corrections can be saved when saving in xlsx-just as you said. (When making changes in compatibility mode we always lost the changes after saving)
He is thinking of getting the new computer (that is, really just a new hard drive) set up with XP (to be able to keep the printer) but installing Office 2007 (and therefore including excel 2007). We are thinking this would eliminate the error message stated above and allow further editing of workbooks/spreadsheets.
Do you think this will work?
Thanks

For the printer, try these links (a quick google search helped)
http://www.canon.co.uk/support/consu...207%20(32-bit)
http://driverupdate.net/articles/dl/...FQ9WDQodXHIIig

You can save 2007 files as .xls, have you tried that?
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Hey Rats,

Why not jump to windows 10 where the "beloved printer" seems to be supported? How about Office 365 that has Excel 2016 too?
