I would like to add a blank row if a cell contains a student name.
my data is set out in the before picture, and i would like it layed out in the after picture.
as i could have many students i do not want to do this manually.
a student could have a maximum of 7 subjects and a minimum of 1.

Consider "Student A" start on A2 and down, put this on B2 and copied down as necessary
=IF(AND(A2<>"",A3=""),"","Subject")
awesome that is on the right track, how do i get the grades to move down as well, and assume subject will be labelled 'English', 'Maths', 'art' etc.
MY formula just for your example, try to provide an excel file with a clear question and accompanied by the desired result
Why do you want this layout? Data analysis will not be as easy as it would with the original layout.
