Question Problem with exchange rate data from MSN

My first post on this forum, so please correct any faux pas gently.

I have an Excel 2010 workbook that uses live exchange rate data from MSN. It uses the standard query that is built into Excel, which links to http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor...xcel/rates.asp.

Sometime in the last couple of weeks, the content of the page has been modified. The names of the currencies have been changed (e.g. British Pound to United Kingdom pound), which I can correct for easily. However, the Euro to US Dollar exchange rate seems to have disappeared altogether, which is causing me much more of a problem.

    My questions are:
    • Do Microsoft actively support this data link?
    • If so, is there a good way of getting in touch with them to point out the missing Euro rate?
    • Does anyone have an alternative currency website that has worked well with Excel queries, and has remained stable over an extended period of time?

Many thanks in advance for any assistance!

    Hi Andrew1011,

    Welcome in Excel Forum.
Could you please attach the excel file which extracts data from the MSN link.

    Regards

    Hi taps,

The file itself is a confidential pricing model, but I have attached the worksheet that extracts the MSN exchange rate data.

The main problem (unless I am missing something) is that the Euro:Dollar rate isn't there any more.

    Regards,

    Andrew

Re: Problem with exchange rate data from MSN

I have found a help form on the MSN website and have submitted a support request regarding the missing Euro:Dollar exchange rate. I will update this thread when/if they respond.

In the meantime, I would still be curious to know whether anyone else has had this problem, as it seems from previous threads that quite a lot of people use the built-in exchange rate query.

Maybe MSN are already factoring in the demise of the Euro as we know it.

I guess I should start building DEM, FRF etc into my pricing model just in case...

Glad to hear that it isn't just me!

I had response yesterday from Microsoft Customer Support:

"Our Money team is aware of this issue and working on the resolution at the earliest. Please bear with us."

There is a Euro/USD rate on the main page http://money.msn.com/ and at the bottom of the page is a FEEDBACK link.

Re: Problem with exchange rate data from MSN

Thanks newdoverman - however, I ideally need all of the exchange rates on a single page.

As the original MSN currency table is still missing the EUR:USD rate ,I am currently trying two alternatives webpages:
The above pages have all of the rates that I need for my pricing model in one place, and they seem to be compatible with Excel web queries. However, they are not as clean as the MSN page referenced by the built-in query, and so I am concerned that they will not perform as well over time.

Instead of the MSN table that has problems that you can't fix try this site:

    http://www.x-rates.com/table/?from=EUR&amount=1.00

Re: Problem with exchange rate data from MSN

The Euro-Dollar rate has reappeared on the MSN webpage used by the built-in query. Some of the other currency names are still different, but I have set up my worksheet so that it will work with either the current or the previous names, in case they decide to revert - see sample attached.

Re: Problem with exchange rate data from MSN

Thanks Andrew, I used the first link from above...http://www.x-rates.com/table/?from=USD and it works great!

I went to Data -> From Web -> Entered "http://www.x-rates.com/table/?from=USD" ->Import and it works great. The links are not highlighted in blue like the other method, but they still refresh and work as the original one does.

My problem was that when I tried the recommended method with the pre-formatted MSN Money Currency Exchange calculator, it brought over everything from the MSN webpage as hyperlinks (news stories, stock ticker, etc.) so it wasn't really working. The link listed works perfectly! My boss was really impressed too

Re: Problem with exchange rate data from MSN

Although the EUR issue that I originally posted about was fixed in July 2013, the built in MSN query subsequently stopped working altogether (can't remember when exactly; I think it was 6 months - 1 year ago).

I've been using the x-rates.com link in my query ever since, and it seems stable over time. The bonus for me is that this source also contains Palladium prices, which I need in the same workbook.

Any solution that results in a happy boss is good in my book!

    Hi,

    I know it's been a long time.

But can you please tell me how to do like this excel sheet
For example, a column having all my prices in JPY and another column with the real converted price in USD (from msn money)

    Your help would be appreciated
