How To : Digital Certificate for Workbook

Moderators: Please don't 'trash can' this post. I'm looking for assistance/information regarding Digital Certificates. The problem to be solved is "How To" ?


I've read some information regarding obtaining a Digital Certificate for a file. All very confusing to me - never attempted before.

Have you accomplished this previously ?

QUESTIONS:

Are digital certificates just for networks ?

If not, what exactly is the advantage to having a Digital Certificate for my workbook ?

How does it protect the workbook - or does it ?

If this is something that I can obtain, can it be done without cost ?

What are the steps in obtaining a Digital Certificate ?


All of this may be very simple but I really don't understand the purpose of Digital Certificates.

I've gleaned one thing from the articles. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Digital Certificate only means the author
assures the users the project is safe to use.

But then the articles go on to say its possible for someone else to change the certificate ? Is that correct ?

If so, I'm still confused. Why use Digital Certificates ?

If you self sign then the certificate will remain unless the code is changed. So the only thing it tells the user is that somebody has altered the code in some way since the author signed it.

If you pay for a Digital cert then the supplier of the cert may carry out some checks of the author/company before the certificate is issued.
Doing a quick search I can not find anywhere that states they actually check the code.

It gives the ins and outs of a Digital Certificate then proceeds to explain why it isn't worth the effort.

I'll mark this thread as solved. I believe I have a better understanding of Dig Cert now.
