failure to open Excel 2016 worksheet

Hi all - I'm running Excel 2016 on a Surface. Excel appears to work OK for small worksheets. I've got two worksheets which are 32,405 KB and 34,839 KB that take about 4 hours to open. I opened one file at 12 noon EDT and watched Task Manager Microsoft Excel CPU settle down to 28.6% and my Memory increment fairly quickly to 377.4 MB where it stopped dead. After about an hour it started incrementing and got up to 501.6 MB. At 3:17 pm today it was 495.6 MB. CPU remained around 28.6 to 29.2%. Right now, CPU is 21.4% and Memory is 100.3 MB. Can anyone tell me what's going on.

When I ran these same big files on Excel 2013 on my Dell Latitude E5540 I never had a bit of trouble.

This works sometimes

Load them on your Dell
Copy each sheet to a new workbook.
Save the workbook
Open the new workbook on your Surface
