(Solved) Trying to fathom what seems a simple issue with filtering

    Morning all,

I have spent far too long trying to sort this one so have to rely again on you guys and your knowledge.

I have a simple spreadsheet with about 10 columns, one of the columns is the date of starting employment which I can filter easily to show what I want.

Another column is Surnames which I can also filter out satisfactorily.

My problem occurs when a few people who all start on the same date but with obviously different surnames.

I need them to be in alphabetical order as well as date order.

Surely this cannot be too difficult? or am I missing something obvious.

    Thank you

    Mike

Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

    Thank you for that.

OK, there should be attached a small workbook called Workbook 2, with 2 sheets. 1 called 'Got' and one called 'Want".

I have removed all the data from adjoining cells to protect privacy.

You will see 4 names on the 'want' sheet that are in different alphabetical order.

Your example does not include the full data set nor show exactly how you are filtering the data set.

I don't use filters very much, so this may not be the best or only solution (but it should at least bump this to the top). It seems that, when i have used filters, when the filter finds duplicates in the filtered field, it displays those in the same order they are present in the source data. My first thought to get what you want would be to sort the source data -- first by start date, then by surname. If the data are sorted correctly in the source data, then they should be sorted correctly in the filtered data.

    MrShorty you are a star.

It would appear that if I filter the surnames initially then filter by date, the surnames stay in alphabetical order which is exactly what i want.

    Thank you everyone who helped.
