When I insert a shape into a worksheet and then try to move it backwards to put it behind the cell contents the forward and backwards buttons are grayed out in the format area. Is there another way to move a shape front to back? thanks.

You can't put a shape behind the cell contents, you can only put it behind other objects.
If you are trying to alternate between seeing a cell value and seeing something else, here are 2 ways to do it:
1) Use 2 shapes
- one with a formula to display the underlying cell value
- alternate which shape is on top

2) Use one shape and manipulate transparency level
